Listen

Isn't it amazing how a song can lift us up, or bring us down, at any given moment in the day? We can be driving along in our cars, so focused on our daily worries, when suddenly a song comes on that says "WAKE UP!" The music can give us a lump in our throats, or paint a picture or memory in our minds. It can lift our spirits, and suddenly we are feeling happier and more energetic than we have in days. It can remind us of friends we haven't seen in years, or places we visited long ago. A song can be associated with a memory so strong, that we even have a sense of being there...the scent of wood fire, or the cold of starry nights, or the thick blanket of a summer night's breeze.

Here's a song that always makes me stop and listen:

"The Wind" by Cat Stevens

I listen to the wind
to the wind of my soul
Where I'll end up well I think,
only God really knows
I've sat upon the setting sun
But never, never never never
I never wanted water once
No, never, never, never

I listen to my words but
they fall far below
I let my music take me where
my heart wants to go
I swam upon the devil's lake
But never, never never never
I'll never make the same mistake
No, never, never, never

  1. Deedee, were we separated at birth? This song did it...lump in the throat, tears in the eyes, transported back to being 15 and my first awareness of the world as being bigger than my small town...my sister's boyfriend gave her a cassette of "Tea for the Tillerman" and "Teaser and the Firecat"...I must replace those albums. Carole King's "Tapestry" brings back that same period of my life. Thanks for reminding me of that fleeting part of my life.

  3. LOL! When I was reading the tag line on FB, it was Homesteadgirl's comment which I didn't realize and so as I read it I thought, "Cool, MY boyfriend also gave me a cassette of the Cat Steven's albums." Now I realize she was referring to me. Also, reminds me of the soundtrack for my favorite movie of all time......"Harold and Maude." I love how songs can do this to us......like smells.

  4. I used to listen to Cat Stevens and Donovan when I was in the York University Library back in the 70s. It was great music to have on when you were studying. They had some kind of set-up with head phones ... can't really remember, but it sure sounded good!!
